Last night Gary Baseman was here in Denver speaking to the AIGA Colorado crowd. It was a great presentation and listening to Gary speak about his work was really inspiring. He brought an extensive slideshow of his work and performances. I’ve never seen such a direct correlation between things an artist had as a child and the things they paint as an adult. Gary also creates a very strong mythology that goes along with his characters which made me enjoy his work even more.
After the lecture, Gary came out to Sputnik for drinks and food and everyone was invited. I was fortunate enough to be at a table with him for much of the evening and had the opportunity to ask him questions and just hang out. He is very friendly and gives freely of his time (which he attributes to all the hours he spends alone in his studio when he’s home). Below is a little sketch he drew in one of my sketchbooks.
