Christmas in Belize!

This Christmas we were very fortunate to have my parents take our immediate family to Belize for the holiday. I was a bit absent from social media and the blog the last couple of weeks while getting work finished up and prepping for the trip. It was a wonderful vacation and a beautiful country. We saw howler monkeys (video below), snorkeled with rays and sharks, and had our first taste of barracuda.

Here are some sketches I did on the trip.

And, just for fun, some video of a howler monkey at the Community Baboon Sanctuary in Belize. Keep in mind, these are wild monkeys. They aren’t cared for other than the land being protected.

I’m not sure why the video isn’t working in the post, but if you can’t see it click on the hyperlink above.

Christmas in Texas! New Editorial Illustration

Texas-Christmas-Santa-Carriage-Desert-Michelle-Kondrich-Illustration

This piece was created for someone who wanted to announce to their clients that their business had moved to Texas. I’ve been playing with a new style of working and I’m thrilled with how this came out. Be prepared to see more work like this in the future!

Today I was informed that my new, custom, standing desk is complete. It’s in my hometown in Nebraska so I won’t be able to pick it up for a couple of weeks, but if I get a photo of it in advance I’ll share. I’m going to be working with the carpenter to either offer the desk for sale through him and/or offer a PDF how-to guide to building your own. And I’ll be sure to post a review once I’ve worked with it for a little while.

Happy Holidays everyone!

This piece is available as a print from Society6 if you’re interested!

Goals for 2012

Okay, so this photo might not actually have anything to do with my goals for 2012, but it’s the holiday season and they look yummy, right? I made these a few nights ago and Chris and I are trying to keep from eating 4-5 a day.

After looking back at my goals from 2011, I’m pleased to report that I either hit all of them or hit a version of them that shifted as my life shifted.

Now that December is half over, it’s time for me to start thinking about the things I want out of 2012 for my illustration business. Here are some very specific goals:

* Launch my new (unfortunately secret) project in the first half of the year

* Create something new to distribute at Denver Con in the summer

* Draw from life more

* Start working in the publishing industry

I’ve also got some larger career goals:

* No free work – and don’t feel bad turning down underpaid jobs

* Make my promotions more targeted

* Apply for residencies & fellowships

* Experiment heavily and get more comfortable with my style of working

What goals are you setting for 2012?

Alice’s Restaurant – Commissioned Illustration

Alice-Restaurant-Arlo-Guthrie-Squirrel-Penguin-DinerSome good friends of ours in New York recently had their first child, Alice. She’s about 4 1/2 months old now and they wanted to commission something for her for Christmas. They wanted something with the theme of the Arlo Guthrie song “Alice’s Restaurant,” and they wanted the lyrics to the chorus to be within the piece. Luckily, I was already familiar with the song (and a big fan of it!).

Above is the final piece. It will be printed at a large, poster size and shipped out to them soon. I’ll try to add some pictures of the printed product. I’d love to be able to sell this but I haven’t been able to get in touch with the record label that owns the rights to the song. If you would be interested in purchasing a print, though, let me know. If there is definitely interest, I’ll do my best to get permission!

A special thanks to the lovely Gaia Bordicchia who lent her eyes and her expertise while I was working on this.
